PREMISE

Seventeen years after sentient alien warships called “The Fog” appear on Earth and militarily overwhelm humanity via the seas, civilization is on the brink of death. Maverick young captain Chihaya takes a big gamble, and defects from the Japanese Navy to partner with Iona, the human avatar of a Fog submarine. Together with a ragtag crew, they fight both humanity and the Fog, seeking to understand the Fog's true existence.

LIKED!

+
interesting sci-fi naval warfare (lasers, gravity weapons, etc)
+
some surprisingly poetic moments

DISLIKED...

no real stakes or conflict
philosophical themes were poorly developed
all 3dcg animation, which got rough at times

OTHER THOUGHTS

ships personified as teen girls… was… interesting
two sequel anime films were produced in 2015, and source manga is still ongoing as of 2024!

CLOSING REMARKS

The elements of *Arpeggio of Blue Steel* are interesting, but aren’t executed well enough to be actually good.

Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova – 2/10
