QUICK FACTS

PREMISE

Civilization has advanced: humanity is emotionless, infertile, and immortal—but lives in underground bio-domes to flee the giant monsters which overrun Earth’s surface. Artificially bred children (so-called “Parasites”) are forced into military service, and must pilot Franxx mech to protect humanity. Darling in the Franxx follows a class of Parasite children, and centers on failing cadet Hiro and his part-monster co-pilot Code 002.

LIKED!

+
pretty animation, good cinematography
+
cutesy mechs (with faces!) and simple monsters contrasted well with emotional story
+
future-universe school uniforms, dinosaur monsters
+
gorgeous 2 OP animations

DISLIKED...

the show takes ~6 episodes to hit a consistent tone (the fanservice matures into thematic sexuality, the storytelling improves, and the characters’ generic personalities deepen)

OTHER THOUGHTS

animators were very into characters and backgrounds drawn in partial shadow
OP, ED, and music throughout were pleasant but generic

CLOSING REMARKS

Darling in the Franxx is a coming-of-age chatacter drama and romance, with a mech & sci-fi setting. It remixes many of the same elements of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gurren Lagaan, but adds a hopeful tone, making for an unexpectedly poetic story.

Darling in the Franxx – 7/10
