PREMISE

One day, Tokyo’s smartest high school student Light Yagami stumbles upon the Death Note, a cursed notebook which enables its user to kill anyone simply by writing the victim’s name. Light begins a murder spree to purge society of all criminals, terrorizing Japan and the world. The ensuing police investigation—headed by the reclusive savant detective “L” and Light Yagami’s own policeman father—forms a thrilling psychological game of cat-and-mouse as Light balances his student & home life with his genocidal agenda.

LIKED!

+
good cinematography
+
excellent dark thriller vibes
+
great voice acting

DISLIKED...

drop in animation consistency after episode 10
plot became boring between episodes 13-20—the increased comic relief felt distracting
worse new characters & psychological rivalries after episode 20

OTHER THOUGHTS

content warning: murder, suicide
1st OP & ED are energetic rock songs and feature very well-animated sequences, with nice color theory.
lots of famous VAs are in this show!

CLOSING REMARKS

The beginning third of Death Note is a spectacularly dark and intense show, the middle third is the same but with average execution, and the last third is underwhelming. A worthwhile thriller—but prepare for a dip in consistency and quality.

Death Note – 8/10
