QUICK FACTS

PREMISE

Yet again, regular high schooler Takeru Shirogane wakes up as a mech pilot military cadet in a parallel world where humanity will lose its 30-year fight against an alien invasion. Stuck in a time loop, Takeru must use his knowledge of future events to try changing the outcome of the war and save his classmates.

LIKED!

+
good action scenes

DISLIKED...

character animation/shading looks like it’s from the late-2000s
animation quality dips severely around episode 17, though it recovers by 20
dating sim origins are obvious—the entire military base seems is full of women fawning over Takeru, and perhaps 6 men total
show spends too much on military school and relationship melodrama, wasting the potential of the time travel and alien invasion elements

OTHER THOUGHTS

OPs: action montages set to upbeat rock music. EDs: more static, nothing special

CLOSING REMARKS

The melodramatic dialogue and plot, underdeveloped harem relationship dynamics, underwhelming fanservice, and a neglected alien-invasion make Muv-Luv Alternative a poor anime adaptation of a visual novel. It just feels too video-game-y. If a 2021 recreation of 2000s schlock is what you seek, look no further.
